Lucy Fisher - The Next Leg Project

Photographer and shoe/Leg lover tells us all about her recent project

As one of the main inspirations for our recent photoshoot, Lucy Fisher, a photographer from Cardiff, is also obsessed with legs. Her most recent project, “The Next Leg Project”, focuses particularly on legs and shoes from around the world. Lucy travels worldwide with her Canon Camera mainly looking downwards.
Where would the inspiration for a project like this come from? Lucy says “When I lived in Auckland and noticed that there were a lot of great shoes and trainers around, with people celebrating their individual style without following particular fashion trends.” Many shoe obsessive’s like to see what footwear people are wearing, maybe even ask them where they got their shoes from, but Lucy prefers to take a still image and study it after.
“The first thing I notice is what the person is wearing, or what kind of position their legs are in,” states Lucy. But what does this say about a person and what makes it so interesting? “My mum always told me to judge a man by his shoes, so maybe it stems from that!” she says.

A pair of shoes can tell a lot about a person, there is a story behind every pair of shoes and what their purpose is.

Lucy’s collection of images has reached more than 6,000. She is trying to focus her shots now into groups such as specific trends and locations.

“It is astonishing how many converse trainers there are in the world!” says Lucy. Its true, when you actually go out and take a focus on such a fine detail in the world, it is so interesting to discover how one style can influence so many lives on a global basis.
The response to Lucy’s project has been incredibly positive all over the world.

From New Zealand, to the UK, US, China and even India, Lucy’s images have proven very interesting. But what is the reaction to someone using legs as the focus for a photograph? “It is not something people usually take a photograph of, so they are happy to be involved, and often feel less self conscious as their faces are not in the picture!” states Lucy. Some people don’t even know they have been photographed as they are rushing by but surely that’s the beauty of it and wondering what that person’s life is about simply from one image of the waist down.
What’s next for Lucy? She is currently in talks with some celebrities who want to get involved with the ‘celeb leg’. She is also looking into publishing a book with a collection of images, working on a video instead of taking stills and exhibiting her images in a few galleries in London.
So all that’s left to say is keep a look out, as your legs may well have been snapped! Would you know your own legs?
